“Spider-Man” has begun filming!
Posted Under: Movie News, Spider-Man

Today is the first day of shooting on “Spider-Man”, according to cinematographer John Schwartzman, who talks a little about the technology used in the 3-D cameras they are shooting with. Congrats to Andrew and the cast and crew! So excited!!

Today was Epic, Monday December 6 marks the first day the Red Epic camera was used to shoot a major studio motion picture. I can say for certainty the camera does exist and boy is it ready for primetime, as a matter of fact it’s a true game changer. We shot in 3D with 4 Epics mounted on 2 3ality TS-5 rigs today, we did 22 set ups, including running high speed and the images look stunning! I do believe the sensor is iso 800 minus 1 stop for the mirror in daylight and iso 640 in tungsten light but that is really for every dp to determine for themselves, Brook Willard and I figured 640 tungsten but that’s just a number. For the first time in digital cinematography, small size doesn’t come with a resolution penalty, as a matter of fact there isn’t a higher resolution camera available other than IMAX, and this one weighs 5lbs with an ultra prime on it, suddenly 3D isn’t a 100lb beast! We had the cameras on dollies and a libra head today and we flew the 3D rig like it was an Arri 435. You guys told me you could do it in September and here we are today, Congratulations.

I am lighting by eye except that I’ve had to re-train myself to work at lower light levels because the camera is so sensitive. The images we made today were stunning, rich beautiful color and the resolution of a vistavision camera all in a package the size of a Hasselblad 501. We are shooting 2.40 at 5K, there wasn’t a hiccup from the cameras all day, the data was flawless, and there was a lot of it. I can tell you without these cameras it would be impossible to move a 3D rig in the ways that THIS story demands, if Jim and the crew hadn’t made these cameras available to us I don’t think we could have shot this movie the way our director envisioned it in 3D. Guys you’ve trusted me to take these out on their maiden voyage and I can tell you that after today I won’t let you down.

Denis Leary to play George Stacy in “Spider-Man”
Posted Under: Movie News, Spider-Man

More “Spider-Man” casting news! Looks like they are really fleshing out Gwen Stacy’s character because Denis Leary has just been cast as her father, Police Captain George Stacy.

Denis Leary is negotiations to play the father of Emma Stone in Columbia’s new Spider-Man movie.

Stone is playing the love interest of Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and Leary will play police captain George Stacy, her father who frequently came into contact with the web-slinging superhero.

In Marvel Comics lore, Stacy perished in an accident during a battle Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, an event that led Gwen Stacy to hate the hero.

Columbia and director Marc Webb are keeping the James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent-penned script under lock and key so it’s uncertain how faithful to the core story Leary’s version of the character will be.

Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Laura Ziskin are producing the movie, which begins shooting in December.

WME-repped Leary hasn’t appeared in a theatrical movie since 2002’s The Secret Lives of Dentists, although he has been starring in the acclaimed drama Rescue Me since 2004. He appeared in HBO’s Recount and has continued to voice the character of Diego the sabertooth in the Ice Age movies.

Sally Field to play Aunt May in “Spider-Man”
Posted Under: Movie News, Spider-Man

Continuing with casting news, THR reports that actress Sally Fields will portray Aunt May in the upcoming “Spider-Man” reboot:

EXCLUSIVE: Sally Field in Talks for Spider-Man Film

Sally Field as Aunt May?

The actress is in early talks to play Peter Parker’s beloved aunt in the new Spider-Man movie, which Marc Webb is directing for Columbia.

The news comes on the heels of Martin Sheen in final negotiations to play Uncle Ben in the relaunch of the movie franchise.

Aunt May is a key supporting character in Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s life, as she is the only family the young hero has.

In the early comics, she was portrayed as a frail lady who worried over her nephew, trying to set him up with the neighbor’s daughter, and frequently got sick, adding to Peter’s personal woes.

In addition to Sheen, the new movie, which begins shooting in December, has Andrew Garfield as Peter, Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as the movie’s unnamed villain.
